When frame advance is activated keep holding down the R2 button and press any other button at the same time to advance the game by one frame. Press the R2 button to freeze the game and activate a frame advance mode. Press the Select button to switch between two different debug modes which are indicated by a small flickering black bar at the left side of the screen. (Note the black bar at the left screen border! The same debug indicator is also used in the early Rayman Prototype on the Atari Jaguar!)
